So you’ve done it! You’ve put your next family session on the calendar and made that investment into your family and your current season of life. Just like any good photographer out there, I want to make sure your photo session is a huge, raving success. So much so that you want to do it again and again…!! And, that you really start to romanticize your own life and see yourselves the way I do, Mama. Beautiful despite the chaos. Perfect within the imperfections. And, oh so worthy of the best experience you can get. So, that’s why I’ve put together my list of the most important things to think about when preparing for your upcoming photo session. So, with that, let’s get into the 4 tips for a better Family Session!
Follow these 4 tips and you’ll be on your way to a better and unforgettable session experience with your photographer!
1. Choose the Right Outfits
What you and your family wear during a photo session can turn good photos into AMAZING photos (or ones that you want to hide up in the attic and never see the light of day again). Be sure to coordinate (instead of match) your outfits together. Choose colors that mimic or will look good hanging up on the walls of your home. Or if styling isn’t your cup of tea, don’t be afraid to reach out and ask me for assistance (or to see my Client Closet!). In fact, I will probably reach out to you if you don’t reach out to me first LOL.
2. Prepare for the Weather
If your photo session is outdoors, make sure to check the weather forecast and dress appropriately. Being dressed properly for a photo session that can last an hour is crucial in the dead of winter or during the rainy season. How comfortable you and your family are, especially children, can directly affect how your photos turn out…so be prepared! This makes for great photos and an enjoyable experience for everyone. I get how hard that this is in the DFW area of Texas during the Spring and Fall seasons, but I usually include ideas/link/outfit choices that will look good with extra layers and without.
3. Plan Ahead
Make sure to arrive 5-10 minutes early to your photo session. I use that time to get to know everyone a little bit, talk to the kiddos, and even help you change into something from my Client Closet. This way, everyone will feel prepared, no one will feel rushed, and our time can be spent capturing wonderful moments with your family and not worrying about who is where stuck in traffic.
4. Relax and Have Fun
My goal is always to create a comfortable and relaxed environment where you and your family can be yourselves. This does not mean that I don’t pose you or make adjustments to what we are doing along the way. But, don’t be afraid to let your personality shine through and most of all, have fun with it! Even if the kids are chaotic, melting down, screaming, or crying…we can make the comforting your child look like snuggles, we can make them running away look like a game, etc. The key is that you, Mama and Dad, remain calm, centered, and even “fake” smiling at times. (and the kids will feed off your energy! So the calmer you are, the calmer they will be!)
